In 2021, we returned to our offices after COVID. The rollback was difficult for some who were still feeling afraid of exposure to illness, and for some who had really enjoyed the solitude and quiet of working from home. Our Social and Self Care Committee suggested we implement The First 15 Reading Program. Members of the committee had seen the model being used in business offices to boost office morale, foster a culture of learning, and improve productivity.
The ”rules” are loose, and participation is completely voluntary. Participants are invited to spend the first 15 minutes of each day reading a book or magazine that is not work related. Some participants turn on an audio book and walk laps around the building. Some read nonfiction or self-help. Others read fiction. Studies show there is a correlation between reading and success, so any item that isn’t work related (discovery or pleadings) is a success. Coming into the office and reading for pleasure or personal growth takes some of the stigma away from the office and the desk. Folks share good books with each other, and discuss ideas over breaks and lunch.
